Bates And Crowell Earn ACWPC All-Academic Awards

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's water polo team had two student-athletes named to the 2010 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Women's All-Academic Team, it was announced Tuesday. Sophomore Kirsten Bates and junior Hanalei Crowell were UCSD's representatives, as a total of 319 student-athletes qualified with a grade point average of 3.20 or higher and having participated in at least fifty percent of their team's competitions.

Bates and Crowell achieved the 'Excellent Level,' with GPA's between 3.20-3.40. The awards were broken down into three categories, also including the Outstanding Level (3.71-4.00) and the Superior Level (3.41-3.70).

Bates led the Tritons with 66 goals during the 2010 season, while adding 51 steals and 27 assists. Crowell was fourth on the team with 49 goals, while also tallying 47 assists and 39 steals.

Both student-athletes will return in 2011 following a successful campaign for the Tritons this Spring. UCSD won two Western Water Polo Association games and advanced to the conference title game for the first time in six years. The Tritons lost a 13-10 decision to Loyola Marymount for the WWPA championship.
