The UC San Diego Strength and Conditioning staff offers year-round training to all of the 23 Triton athletic teams. Through a wide variety of stimulus and techniques, our professional strength coaches provide a comprehensive training approach that allows our student-athletes to compete at their highest level.

As a strength staff, we invest fully in the mission of each of our teams as well as to the success of each student-athlete. It is our goal to help each student-athlete realize, if not surpass, his or her athletic potential. Through a blend of scientifically-based training techniques and high intensity motivation, we are able to extract the best out of each of our student-athletes.

The Triton Strength and Conditioning coaches are certified strength and conditioning specialists (CSCS) who pride themselves on maintaining their knowledge of the most current training concepts and techniques in order to develop the most comprehensive and competitive student- athlete.

Our staff is a high-energy, hands-on staff that knows what it's like to be dedicated to a team effort for a common goal. We believe that the greatest feeling of accomplishment is to know you did all you could do to become all you can be. It is our passion to make you better.

In October of 2015, UC San Diego opened the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center on campus. The 6,700 square foot area is adjacent to the Alex G. Spanos Training Center, combining for 12,000 square feet of space.

The state-of-the-art facility features zones for strength and conditioning and athletic training/rehabilitation, as well as an outdoor conditioning plaza, offices and a conference room. Specific amenities include 15 Hammer Strength Power Racks, Keiser Functional Trainers, Tendo units, Wattbikes, a 12-person hydro tub and an AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill.

MYLES COOPER
Director of Strength & Conditioning

Myles Cooper returned to UC San Diego in September of 2013 to serve as the Tritons' Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Just prior, Cooper was an assistant athletic performance coach at UCLA from 2011-13.

Cooper was hired as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at UCSD in July of 2010, where he worked until 2011 before departing for UCLA.

Cooper served as a strength and conditioning intern at Marquette University before his time in Westwood. He worked with men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's tennis and women's basketball.

Cooper has also worked as an intern in the strength and conditioning department at the University of Utah and served as a conditioning coach at Park City High School in Park City, Utah.

From January 2008 to August 2009, he worked as a facility manager at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH) in Kearns, Utah, and has also spent time with the ABA's Utah Snow Bears.

Cooper earned a Bachelor's Degree in athletic training from Weber State University in 2002 and went on to obtain his Master's in exercise physiology with an emphasis in strength and conditioning from Baylor University in 2007. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

 

JON GREGORY
Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Jon Gregory was named sport performance coach at UC San Diego in December 2016.

Prior to arriving on campus, Gregory served as director of strength and conditioning at Saint Mary’s College (2013-16). During this time, he was the head strength and conditioning coach for the Gaels baseball, tennis, men’s golf, women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse programs. In addition, Gregory developed and directed an internship program for the graduate kinesiology department, developed comprehensive player development programs, and also instructed student-athletes on lifting techniques, body mechanics, injury prevention and recovery techniques.

A native of Fremont, Gregory earned his bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from Saint Mary’s in 2013. He later received his master’s in strength and conditioning from Saint Mary’s in 2015.

 

JESI METZ

Jesi Metz was named a Strength and Conditioning intern with UC San Diego in September of 2015.

Prior to coming to La Jolla, Metz was a graduate assistant in Strength and Conditioning at Grand Canyon University from 2013-15. She was also an assistant women's basketball coach at GCU from 2011-13. She held the same role at Northwest Nazarene University from 2007-11.

Metz played basketball professionally in Slovakia, Honduras and for USA Elite as well.

Metz received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Northwest Nazarene University in 2006 and her Master of Arts in psychology In 2014.

MATT COX

Matt Cox was named UC San Diego's Performace Coach for Aquatics in July of 2017.

Before arriving at UCSD, Cox served as graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Hawai'i from 2015-17 with the Men's Swimming, Diving, Women's Track and Men's Tennis programs. Prior to UH, Cox was a strength and conditioning intern at Marshall University, working with all Olympic sports from January 2014-August 2015. He also spent time at UCLA as an Athletic Performance intern with Men's Water Polo and Men's Volleyball in 2014.

Cox graduated from Campbell University in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science, before obtaining his master's in kinesiology and rehabilitation science with an emphasis in physical activity in 2017. He is Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC), a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach (USAW).
