LA JOLLA, Calif. - Four Tritons scored in double figures as the University of California San Diego men's basketball team won a city showdown, 82-68, over Point Loma Tuesday night at RIMAC Arena.
UC San Diego had an impressive second half, shooting a blistering 72 percent (18-25) and out-scoring PLNU 48-31 in the period.
UCSD tallied 32 of its points in the paint, but was also effective from behind the three-point line, netting 12 treys, the team's most since February of last season.
Junior guard George Buaku led all players with a career-high 16 points. He was 5-for-5 from the field with four three-pointers. Buaku also contributed three rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.
Senior guard Adam Klie finished with 13 points, sophomore center Chris Hansen had 12 and sophomore guard Christian Oshita totaled 10. Klie had six assists and Hansen grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Sterling Somers led the Sea Lions with 14 points while Josh Rodriguez had 11 and Mike Planeta added 10. Rodriguez dished out nine assists with a team-high six boards.
Point Loma shot 55 percent (12-22) in the first half and dipped all the way down to 38 percent (9-24) in the second.
PLNU took a 10-point lead, 33-23, when Jack Langborg drilled a three with 5:39 left in the opening stanza. However, UCSD out-scored its opponent, 11-4, over the remaining time in the half and the Sea Lions led by just three points, 37-34, at the break.
With 12:23 left in the game, freshman forward Scott Everman hit a three-pointer to put the Tritons up 48-47 and they would not trail again. Hansen hit back-to-back threes with under three minutes remaining, each one putting UCSD up by 14 points. At the 1:32 mark, an Eric Patton free throw gave the Tritons a 15-point advantage (80-65), their largest of the game.
UC San Diego improved to 3-0 while PLNU dropped to 0-3. Both teams are receiving votes in the NABC's coaches' poll.
It was the first meeting between the Tritons and Sea Lions since 2005.
After three consecutive home games to start the season, UC San Diego now hits the road for the first time to compete at Western Oregon's DoubleTree D2 Shootout. The Tritons play Concordia (Ore.) on Nov. 18 at 5:00 p.m. and take on the host Wolves on Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
