SAN RAMON, Calif. - University of California San Diego sophomore first baseman Tyler Durna has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Player of the Week for the second time this season, for March 20-26.
Durna, a Chino Hills native and graduate of Ruben S. Ayala High School, gives UCSD three weekly honorees for 2017. Senior outfielder Jack Larsen earned the program's first distinction on Feb. 14. Durna's first award came three weeks ago on March 7.
Durna aided eighth-ranked UC San Diego to a come-from-behind, 2-1 series victory over CCAA North Division foe Sonoma State in La Jolla over the weekend, batting a team-best .545 (6-for-11) with a 1.273 slugging percentage and team highs of six runs scored, two home runs and five RBI.
Durna went 2-for-4 with a double in Saturday's opening loss, the only Triton with multiple hits. In Sunday's nightcap he was 2-for-3 with two home runs, one walk, a career-high four runs and career-high-matching four RBI. It was Durna's first career multi-home run game, and he now has a team-best five long balls on the year. His two-run blast made it a 5-0 game in the third, and he added a solo shot in the sixth.
In Sunday's first game, Durna was 2-for-4 with a double, walk, two runs and one RBI. Durna did not strike out in the series, and also made 27 clean putouts at first base without an error.
After beginning the year 1-for-11 to see his average at .091, Durna has gone 26-for-57 (.456) with six doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI over the Tritons' last 16 games, all of them starts at first. He has reached base in all 16 and produced at least one hit in 15, including the last 11 straight for the top hit streak of his career and longest by a Triton so far in 2017. Durna had two hits in eight of those 11 contests. His team-best batting average is now up to a season-high .397, third in the CCAA.
Currently in Spring Break, UC San Diego travels north to Turlock later this week for a three-game series at Stanislaus State on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Warrior Baseball Field.
