Torrid Shooting Leads Tritons to 83-73 Win Over Humboldt State

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Hitting almost 56 percent of its shots, the University of California San Diego men's basketball team defeated conference opponent Humboldt State, 83-73, Friday night at RIMAC Arena.

With its third-straight win, UC San Diego improved to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Tritons moved up a spot to third place in the league. Humboldt State had its three-game win streak snapped and fell to 5-10 and 2-7.

UCSD netted 25 of its 45 shots to finish with a season-best 55.6 percentage, marking the fifth time this year that the team made good on more than half of its attempts. The Tritons were particularly hot in the second half, shooting 57.9 percent after going 11-for-19 from the field. Overall, they were 12-for-25 from behind the three-point arc, 48 percent.

Four players finished with 10-plus points for UCSD including Christian Bayne (game-high 22), Christian Oshita (19), Scott Everman (15), and Anthony Ballestero (13). Ballestero, Everman, and Oshita made four three-pointers each. Oshita added a game-co-high seven rebounds, while Michael Shoemaker cranked out a career-high four assists.

UC San Diego led for just over 29 minutes.

After going up 6-0, the Tritons found themselves down by seven, 23-16, with 6:02 remaining in the first half. However, back-to-back threes by Oshita and Everman got them right back in it. Another trey by Oshita at the 2:42 mark put UCSD back in front and it would lead by four, 37-33, at the break.

Tied 42-42 early in the second half, Oshita struck again as his three-pointer sparked a 10-point run that was enough to keep the Tritons ahead until the final buzzer. A Ballestero three with 4:16 left in the game put the Tritons up by 14, 71-57, their largest lead of the contest.

The Lumberjacks got 18 points from Kameron Curl and 16 from Davasyia Hagger. Jalen Terry finished with 12 points on four three-pointers.

Humboldt State made 48.3 percent (29-60) of its shots overall and 28.6 percent (6-21) of its three-pointers.

Both teams took care of the ball, with each committing just seven turnovers.

UC San Diego hosts league rival Chico State (9-4, 6-3) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats suffered a 65-47 loss at Cal State San Marcos Friday.
