SAN RAMON, Calif. - The University of California San Diego is the proud host of the 2017 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's and Women's Soccer Tournaments at Triton Soccer Stadium, Nov. 3 and 5.
UC San Diego will provide the venue for the first time since 2008, and fourth in all after staging previous installments in 2001 and 2006. All three of those years, the two-time reigning and record 10-time CCAA Tournament champion Triton women were the victors. The UCSD men won their first CCAA tourney banner last November in Turlock. They were unable to qualify in 2001, 2006 and 2008. The Triton women have only missed out once, in 2013, since joining the CCAA in 2000.
"We are thrilled to be bringing the CCAA Soccer Tournament back to UC San Diego," said UCSD Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards. "This return to La Jolla was a long time coming and a natural progression borne out of the sustained excellence of our men's and women's programs. That success generated an incredible atmosphere at our venue, which I believe will translate very well to this year's tournament. I am certain that come November, we will provide an outstanding championship experience once again for all of the participants, as well as for the tremendous soccer-viewing public here in San Diego."
"UC San Diego has great facilities and a history of being an outstanding host for championships, so we are delighted to be heading to La Jolla for the 2017 soccer championships," said CCAA Commissioner Nate Salant. "It seems that every event we do there draws well, perhaps because that area is an attractive destination for our northern schools and easily accessible for our southern ones, and because we know we'll have great weather and plenty of ancillary options. You could not ask for a better staff for an event, so I look forward to six great matches at a wonderful venue.
"The CCAA has a history of going deep into the soccer championships once the regionals start, and our winners earn automatic (NCAA) bids, so a strong showing here bodes well for everyone."
For the fourth year in a row, the CCAA schedule consists of a single round robin, with all teams meeting once for 12 matches total, and the top six sides in the final regular-season standings (three points for a win, one for a tie) qualifying for the CCAA Tournament. First-round matches featuring the No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 seeds will be contested on Tuesday, Oct. 31, hosted by the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.
Four conference semifinals, two men's and two women's, will take place at Triton Soccer Stadium on Friday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The winners will meet in finals on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Though start times are determined, the exact order of the matches will be set only after the full field is known. The tourney champions will earn the CCAA's automatic NCAA Championship bids. That prize will significantly be a first on the men's side.
Single-day general admission is $10, with a cost of $5 for seniors (65 and up), high school, junior college or college students with proper identification, and children (3-12). Kids aged two and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at Triton Soccer Stadium on the two days of the event, beginning one hour before the first match, so 10 a.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Parking is free on Sunday, but permits are required on the UC San Diego campus all day on Friday, Nov. 3. Permit machines are located in every lot and on every floor of the nearby Hopkins Parking Structure.
For those unable to attend the event, all six contests on Nov. 3 and Nov. 5 will feature a live video stream, though exact details are still being worked out with the league office. Live stats, as always, will also be provided here.
Heading into the final three weeks of the CCAA slate, the seventh-ranked UC San Diego women's team is in great shape to defend its 2016 regular-season title, having built an eight-point cushion atop the table on the strength of a perfect 8-0 start to league play. The Triton men moved up from a tie for fifth to begin the day on Sept. 29, to sole possession of first heading into Oct. 8. Cal Poly Pomona's come-from-behind, 2-1 home win over Sonoma State that afternoon, leaves UCSD in second.
Both squads finish with five-game road stretches over the next three weekends, four of them CCAA contests in Northern California. They are each slated to play at Humboldt State this Friday, Oct. 13, and Sonoma State on Sunday, Oct. 15, but please stay tuned to UCSDtritons.com and our official Twitter account @UCSDtritons for any updates as fires in Napa and Sonoma counties could affect the schedule.
