The Tritons will vie for a record 11th CCAA Tournament title as the top seed at home beginning Nov. 3.

Back to Back! No. 8 Tritons Have Clinched Second Straight CCAA Regular-Season Title, Top Tournament Seed

SAN RAMON, Calif. - The University of California San Diego's men's and women's soccer games at Sonoma State University that were postponed on Sunday, Oct. 15, due to the raging wildfires in Sonoma County, are officially canceled and will not be made up.

Sonoma State also had its scheduled contests on Friday, Oct. 13, against Cal State San Marcos, wiped out for the same reason, necessitating a restructuring of the standings format for the 2017 season, as soccer relies on a point system with three for a win, and one for ties, over what was supposed to be 12 games for each team.

The men's and women's standings will be generated for this season only, on a points-per-game system, meaning total points divided by matches played, as opposed to straight win percentage in baseball and softball, two other sports in which contests could be compromised by natural elements.

With the decisions to not reschedule Sonoma State's matches and subsequently settle on points per game to determine the final standings, head coach Brian McManus' eighth-ranked UC San Diego women clinched their second successive CCAA regular-season title before a single ball had even been kicked this past weekend. The Tritons are 12-2-1 overall and a perfect 9-0 in league play, with two road dates left this week at Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Oct. 26, and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. Even if they drop both, and their nearest competitors win out, UCSD's points-per-game total can't be eclipsed. The Tritons ran the table a year ago, at 12-0, and have won 23 consecutive CCAA matches going back to 2015.

As the top seed for the CCAA Tournament, the UCSD women have also earned themselves a first-round bye on Tuesday, Oct. 31, and booked their place in the semifinals. Triton Soccer Stadium will serve as the host for the men’s and women’s semifinals and finals, on Friday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 5, respectively, with the order of games to be determined after the full field of participants is known.

On the men's side, No. 19 UCSD (9-1-4, 6-1-2 CCAA) sits in fourth behind Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills. With results from last Friday, Oct. 20, head coach Jon Pascale's Tritons clinched a fifth successive CCAA Tournament berth. After Cal State San Bernardino lost at SF State on Sunday, Oct. 22, and later in the day the final whistle blew in Cal State LA's 2-1 loss at Humboldt State, UCSD was assured of a top-four seed in the tourney, meaning that at worst, the Tritons have guaranteed themselves a first-round home game on Tuesday, Oct. 31. They could still earn a first-round bye pending this week's activity.

UCSD, like the Triton women, heads to the Bay Area this Wednesday, Oct. 25, for two critical matches at East Bay and CSUMB. It appears that six points from two victories would mean a top-three seed, with some help needed to gain that top-two bye.
