Tritons Perform Well on Day One of Chandler Cup Hosted by UC Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis team played well on day one of the Chandler Cup hosted by the University of California Berkeley on Friday. Play continues on day two in Berkeley on Saturday while the third and final day will take place on Sunday.

Bijan Moallemi won his first two singles matches in Flight A, beating Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington in the first round by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 2-6 and 6-1 victory over Phil Kao of Stanford. He will face Bo Katsarov of Cal in the third round on Saturday morning. Moallemi also teamed up with sophomore Alex Placek for an 8-3 victory over Austin Kakar and Vegerd Veskimagi of the University of the Pacific in Flight B. The duo will face the Sacramento State tandem of Holden Chiang and Sven-David Rueff in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Blake Meister and Eric Rubens dropped their first round doubles match in Flight A by an 8-4 scored to the University of Washington pair of Tobi Ebanaus and Patrick Fisher. The Triton doubles team will face Piotr Dilaj and Stanley Sarapanic of Boise State in the consolation draw. Individually, both Meister and Rubens dropped their first singles match in Flight B and will play on Saturday in the consolation draw. Meister fell by a 6-0 and 6-2 score to Artem Gramma of Pacific while Rubens lost to Sarapanic of Boise State by scores of 7-6 (6) and 6-2.

Sophomore Chad Becker got his first action as a Triton on Friday, losing in three sets to Skyler Tateishi of Washington. Scores were 6-2, 4-6 and 6-1. He will play Chris Hom of the University of San Francisco in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning.

Following this weekend's Chandler Cup, head coach Eric Steidlmayer and the doubles team of Meister and Rubens will take part in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships in Columbus, Ohio on November 1-4. The Triton tandem qualified for the prestigious event by winning the Wilson ITA Small College Doubles Championship on October 14.
