SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UC San Diego men's crew raced to a San Diego City Championship on Saturday, topping University of San Diego and San Diego State University on Mission Bay. UCSD finished two seconds ahead of second-place USD.
“It feels good to win although we were a little disappointed in the margin,” said Shawn Hay, a member of the Triton varsity eight boat. “But USD is getting fast and it probably says something about how far our program has come that we expect to win this event handily. But winning anything this many years in a row is a big achievement?we're always happy to win.”
For the Tritons, who are receiving the highest vote total of program history in the latest USRowing poll, it was the fifth consecutive City Championship title.
The varsity eight group included coxswain Shanti Tharayil, Ryan Andre (stroke), Shawn Hay (7-seat), Derek Huffman (6), Jay Dee Morgan (5), Zachary Hearns (4), Jeff Collett (3), Gilbert Collins (2) and Jonathan Lynch (bow).
UCSD's junior varsity boat even managed to come in third, defeating SDSU, as a competitor in the varsity eight race. The novice eight group crossed the finish line in second place of their race, just one second off the lead.
“It was a good day overall,” Triton head coach Zach Johnson said. “We were battling a lot of injuries but came out with some good times and a strong start to our new training cycle.”
Johnson's squad will be back in action on Saturday, April 19 to compete in the Newport Regatta, a competition featuring four of the top six teams in UCSD's conference.
