BELLINGHAM, Wash. ? Junior midfielder Alexia Zatarain lifted the UC San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory Saturday over Western Washington University.
Zatarain (Canyon Country, Calif.) scored both of UCSD's goals, including the deciding one a little more than two minutes into extra time.
The Tritons (2-0-0) jumped ahead in the ninth minute of the first half after Zatarain knocked it home from the goalmouth after a cross by Lindsay Mills (Valencia, Calif.) was knocked on by Sara McTigue (Bellflower, Calif.). As freshmen, Mills and McTigue each notched career point No. 1.
Despite trailing nearly the entire game, the Vikings (1-1-0) evened the count with less than seven minutes to play in regulation to eventually force overtime.
With just 2:04 gone in the extra period, senior forward Natasha Belak-Berger (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) dribbled the ball almost 40 yards through the midfield and fed Zatarain on the right corner of the penalty area. Zatarain cut inside and fired a shot from 15 yards that caromed off a WWU defender and bounced inside the near post.
Zatarain ended up doubling her career total for goals in just one night, picking up No. 3 and No. 4 of her three years so far as a Triton.
Although the UCSD squad was outshot 15-9, the Tritons put more on target with a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Jessica McGovern (Reseda, Calif.) totaled four saves on the evening.
The Tritons will play their home opener Wednesday against Cal State San Marcos. The match begins at 7 p.m. The Cougars defeated California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Cal State L.A. on Friday by a score of 1-0.
