SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. ? The 22nd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team (2-1) won two games on Saturday at the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino. UCSD defeated No. 15 Lewis 21-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-20. In the win, Rebecca Bailey had 15 kills, going over the 1,000 career kill mark. The Tritons then defeated unranked Shippensburg, PA. 3-1 in their final tournament game. by scores of 25-17, 25-12, 21-25 and 26-24.
Lewis captured the first set 25-21, but UCSD took the next three sets 25-17, 25-13 and 25-20.
Bailey had 15 kills while Schmidt had 10 in the match. Katie Condon had nine kills and Karen Reis had eight kills and six block assists as the Tritons hit .201 for the match. Cara Simonsen had seven block assists.
Stephanie Sagat led the Flyers with 15 kills on .438 hitting.
Elaine Chen collected 39 assists and 10 digs for UCSD while freshman libero Roxanne Brunsting had a match-high 15 digs. Flyers setter Rachel Ruedi had 28 assists and 10 digs while libero Lauren Hatter had 14 digs.
Lewis lost one of its top players, Sara deBuhr midway through the match due to a leg injury. She had five kills and three blocks before being hurt.
In the win over Shippensburg, Kimberly Carpenter had 11 kills and Katie Condon 10 kills as the Tritons prevailed 25-17, 25-12, 21-25 and 26-24. Setter Kacey Martinez had 21 assists. Freshman libero Roxanne Brunsting had 16 digs. Karen Reis had 10 digs and five service aces.
Hannah Sorber and Colleen Toomey combined for 23 kills for the Raiders as they finished 0-4 in the tournament. Kelsi Hoffman had a match-high 18 digs while setter Maureen DuVall had 29 assists and 13 digs.
UCSD is back in action next week when it hosts the Triton Invitational September 4-6.
