LA JOLLA, Calif. - After starting the 2008 season with a 2-0-0 road trip to Washington, the UC San Diego women's soccer team is set for its home opener on Wednesday ? a 7 p.m. match against Cal State San Marcos (2-0-1).
The Tritons capped off their trip to the Northwest with a 2-1 overtime victory over Western Washington Saturday, with junior midfielder Alexia Zatarain (Canyon Country, Calif.) scoring both goals to lead the UCSD attack.
Seniors Natasha Belak-Berger (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Jessica McGovern (Reseda, Calif.), All-West Region selections in 2007, have both played well out of the gates. Belak-Berger has contributed one goal and one assist with four shots on goal while McGovern has totaled eight saves to go along with just one score allowed.
The Cougars of CSUSM battled two California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents this past weekend, topping Cal State L.A. 1-0 on Friday and then playing to a 0-0 draw with Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday. Wednesday's match between the Tritons and Cougars, members of the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NAIA), will be the first-ever meeting between the squads.
The next opponent for UCSD to tackle on the schedule is also a historically new foe, Texas A&M Commerce. The Lions started off their year with a 4-2 victory against Drury and will face Cal State L.A. on Thursday before traveling to La Jolla for a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday.
After the two-match set at home, the Tritons begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association slate on the road Sept. 12 against San Francisco State.
