LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team aims to build on its 2-0-0 start when it faces Cal State San Marcos on Friday at 7 p.m., the final non-conference contest for the Tritons before the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule begins Sept. 12.
UCSD earned victories against Hawaii-Hilo and Concordia University Irvine last week. The last occurrence of the Tritons starting their season with two or more wins came in 2005 when the UCSD squad compiled three victories out of the gates en route to an 11-5-2 year.
Senior forward Tony Fernandez (San Diego, Calif.) scored two goals Saturday night to lead the Tritons to a 2-0 win over the CUI Eagles. UCSD was shorthanded for the match's final 38 minutes after two yellow cautions and a subsequent red card forced the squad to play with 10 men.
Friday's opponent, the Cougars of CSUSM, hold a 1-2 record early on in the 2008 campaign. Members of the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the CSUSM men's soccer program is in its third year of existence.
The Tritons and Cougars have met only once so far, with UCSD suffering a 3-2 defeat on Sept. 21, 2007. Junior Shane Micheil (Mission Viejo, Calif.) tallied an assist in the losing effort.
On the weekend of Sept. 12, the Tritons will begin their CCAA slate on the road with contests against San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay. SFSU and CSUMB were picked to finish third and fifth, respectively, in the conference's North Division.
After travelling to the Bay Area, head coach Jon Pascale's squad will host No. 11 Cal State Dominguez Hills on the La Jolla campus Sept. 17 for a 7 p.m. match.
