LA JOLLA, Calif.. ? The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its opener in the Triton Invitational by cruising past Notre Dame de Namur 25-15, 25-14, 25-17 on Thursday night. With the win, UCSD improves to 3-1, while NDNU drops to 0-5. Rebecca Bailey had a huge night with 17 kills against only two errors for a .469 hitting percentage. Cara Simonsen added six kills on .667 hitting and Lauren Bradley also added six kills off the bench. As a team, the Tritons hit at a .356 clip, while holding the Argonauts to just .072. Roxanne Brunsting had a game-high 15 digs and Elaine Chen added 26 assists.
NDNU scored the first three points of the first set before the Tritons tied the set on a Bailey kill at 5-5. The Tritons went on a 5-1 run to push the lead to 10-6. After NDNU cut the lead down to 12-10, the Tritons opened up a 21-13 lead on a Bailey kill. After Hillary Williamson's kill forced set point, the Tritons closed out the set on a Williamson and Kaitlin Potter block at 25-15.
The Tritons hit at a .520 clip in the second game, with 15 kills against only two errors. UCSD doubled-up on NDNU early, leading 10-5 on a Williamson ace. It was never closer than five points the rest of the way as the Tritons led by as many as 10 points at 22-12 after a Bradley kill. Kim Carpenter closed the set with a kill at 25-14.
The Tritons scored six of the first seven points of the third set on strong serving by Potter and Janessa Werhane. A Bailey kill pushed UCSD's lead to 15-6, forcing NDNU into a timeout. After the Tritons took a 21-12 lead on a Bradley kill, NDNU had a small run cutting it to 21-16. UCSD scored the next three points on consecutive kills by Bailey, Bradley and Simonsen to put the set out of reach. Bradley sent down the final kill at 25-17.
In other Invitational action, Cal State L.A. swept Seattle Pacific and BYU-Hawaii swept CSU Dominguez Hills.
UCSD is back in action tomorrow with two matches. UCSD faces Lynn at 1:30, and takes on BYU-Hawaii at 6:30.
