WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ? UC San Diego freshman
Bre Schofield was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Female Runner of the Week, it was announced Monday by the conference office. Schofield takes home the weekly honor for the second week in a row after posting her second individual victory of the season at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Invitational on Saturday.
The Carlsbad, Calif. native continued her outstanding rookie campaign last week, crossing the finish line with a time of 22:09 to lead the Triton women to the team title and a UCSD sweep of the day's races. Schofield finished the 6,000-meter race 14 seconds ahead of the second place runner, Cal Poly Pomona's Tiffany Turner, showing her excellent ability to finish once again.
The freshman has been the Tritons' top overall finisher in all three of their competitions this season, also breaking the tape in UCSD's home opener against Point Loma Nazarene, the University of San Diego, and UNLV three weeks ago ? her first collegiate cross country event. The UCSD women have now won two out of their three events so far in 2008.
Schofield was named the CCAA Female Runner of the Week last week after finishing seventh overall against a mostly Division-I field at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational on September 13.
The Tritons are off this week before traveling to Pennsylvania for the Slippery Rock Invitational on Saturday, October 4. The race, which will serve as a preview for the 2008 NCAA Division II Championships, begins at 9:00 a.m. local time.
