Tritons Finish in 7th Place At Western Washington Invitational

BELLINGHAM, Wash. ? The UC San Diego men's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the 2008-09 season on Saturday, finishing seventh out of 11 teams at the 37th annual Western Washington Invitational. The Tritons shot 284 in the second round to finish with a 6-over par 582 at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club.

No. 12 Sonoma State held a five-stroke lead after the first round on Friday and shot 282 in round two for a winning score of 16-under par 560. Host Western Washington posted the best round of the tournament on Saturday with an 11-under par 277 to finish second overall with a two-day score of 12-under 564. The Tritons finished with a two round total of 582, two strokes behind WWU's second squad in the field and Dixie State, who were tied for fifth place at 580.

Newcomer Keith Okasaki was UCSD's top finisher in the 6,561-yard, par 72 course, finishing in a tie for 11th place after his second consecutive even round 72 of the tournament. His total of 144 was just one shot better than teammates Billy Olsen and Raj Samra, who carded final round scores of 69 and 67, respectively, to finish in a tie for 17th place.

Ryan Bailey finished with a second round score of 76 to finish with a two-day total of 6-over par 150, which placed him in a tie for 40th place. Brian Olshock finished in a tie for 46th place after a final round 77, giving him a two-day score of 9-over par 153. 

Despite the second place finish, Western Washington's Thomas Jun was the top individual finisher in the event, posting an impressive score of 6-under par 138. His total was one stroke better than Sonoma State's Patrick Bauer, who finished with a 139 after a second round 70. The Seawolves' Jarin Todd and British Columbia's Brandon Markiw finished in a tie for third place, carding identical two-day totals of 4-under 140.  

Head coach Mike Wydra and the Tritons will stay in the state of Washington to compete in the NCAA Division II Preview Tournament, also hosted by Western Washington University, on Monday and Tuesday. The prestigious event will feature four teams ranked in the top-10 of the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' preseason poll and will be played at the Loomis Trail Country Club in Blaine, Wash.
