TURLOCK, Calif. ? Cal State Stanislaus got a goal early in the first half and the UC San Diego men's soccer team was unable to respond, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Warriors Friday afternoon at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex. UCSD outshot Stanislaus 7-2 in the second half, but could not answer with equalizer.
The Tritons, who have now gone four consecutive matches without a goal, fall to 6-4-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the CCAA with the loss. The win snapped an eight-game skid for the Warriors, who now stand at 2-8-1, 1-7-0 after their first league victory.
Head coach
Jon Pascale's squad has been playing very well over the last several matches, but the Tritons just cannot seem to put one away. UCSD has not scored, in fact, since the 49th minute of their win over Cal Poly Pomona on September 26 ? an unbelievable scoreless stretch of nearly 400 minutes.
The Tritons outshot the Warriors 14-9 for the match and dominated play in the second half, but it was the home team that came out on top after scoring the only goal of the game at the 10:53 mark. Defender Trevor Grimbleby won a header and fed the ball up to forward Jose Velazquez, who's shot went right between the legs of Triton goalkeeper
Peter Akman for the eventual game-winner.
UCSD did it's best to respond, getting several good chances from forwards
Tony Fernandez and
Tom Caplan and midfielder
Shane Micheil, but only one of the Tritons' 14 shots in the match were on frame. UCSD also held an advantage on corner kicks, getting six to three.
Warrior keeper Javier Rosales needed just one save to record his second shutout of the season, while Akman tallied three to keep the deficit at one.
The Tritons will look to put an end to their four-match winless streak Sunday against Chico State at 2:00 p.m.
