PASADENA, Calif. - The UC San Diego fencing team traveled to Cal Tech in Pasadena to fence against four conference teams. It was a very successful tournament with the Tritons scoring overall victories against the four teams they faced. They easily defeated USC 47-7, UC Santa Barbara 44-10, and UC Los Angeles 38-16. The Tritons also had a narrow victory against Arizona State28-26. Breaking the day's action up into individual squad performance, UCSD's men's foil brought home the most victories with a 34-2 performance. Women's foil did nearly as well, with 33 victories and just 3 defeats. Both men's and women's foil went easily undefeated for the day. Men's epee scored 26 victories for the day and men's sabre added 25 more. Men's epee and sabre were also undefeated; each edging out Arizona with close 5-4 wins. Women's epee and sabre each were 3-1 in squad play, as both were defeated by strong Arizona squads. This resulted in a victory to Arizona for their combined women's team.
Individually, UCSD displayed some amazing fresh talent on the team. Going undefeated for the day were freshmen Armin Chan and Michael Fong. Pilar Alicea was also undefeated in her first year with the team for women's foil. Senior and team captain Zitin Kachru also had an undefeated day in women's foil. Other strong performances were added by men's sabre squad captain Bryan Kim with an 11-1 record and men's epee squad captain Nick McGuiness who was 10-2. Amy Biancini lead women's epee with a 9-3 record and Anne Schnecker had an 8-4 record for women's sabre.
The Tritons have their next conference match at home on November 15 when they will face UC Irvine and Cal Tech.
