Tritons Return To Action With Asics/UC Irvine Invitational On Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. – After an impressive showing in their season opener, the UC San Diego cross country teams will compete in the Asics/UC Irvine Invitational this Saturday looking to ride the momentum of a pair of team victories two weeks ago.

Saturday's competition will feature four races at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields on the UCI campus. The 5k women's B Race is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m., followed by the women's A Race at 8:40. The men will open with an 8k A Race at 9:10 before the B Race at 9:50 wraps things up.

UCSD will be competing against an elite field from both the Division I and II levels in its second event of 2009. In addition to host UCI, Cal Poly, Chico State, Cal State San Marcos, Fresno State, and USC will be among the school's entering teams this weekend.

The Triton women defeated Point Loma Nazarene, Cerritos College, San Diego Christian, and Sonoma State to begin the season on August 29, while the men were victorious over the Sea Lions and Falcons.

Sophomore Bre Schofield turned in a dominant performance for the women, breaking the tape in the 2.5 mile race with a time of 15:12.2 to win UCSD's opener for the second consecutive year. Freshman Brian Knight had a very impressive debut for the Tritons on the men's side, finishing second overall with a time of 22:52.7 on the four-mile course. UCSD had five of the top 10 finishers in the women's race, while the men recorded five of the top six individual times.

UCSD will compete in the UC Irvine Invitational for the first time since 2007, when the women finished fifth out of 12 teams, while the men had a sixth place showing in a field of 20.
