LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego swimming and diving team is set to start its 2009-10 season on Saturday with the annual Blue vs. Gold exhibition.
The intrasquad meet, with the Tritons splitting the men's and women's teams into two squads apiece, will start at 11 a.m. Because of the temporary closure of both pools at Canyonview, the Blue vs. Gold event has been moved to nearby Cathedral Catholic High School.
The UCSD swimming and diving squads are coming off a spectacular 2008-09 campaign in which the women finished third and the men placed seventh at the NCAA Division II National Championships held in Houston, Texas. Between the two sides, the Tritons are returning 14 All-Americans and 21 All-Conference student-athletes in 2009-10.
Senior
Daniel Perdew repeated as national champion this past season and earned UCSD Athlete of the Year honors for the second straight year while the women return three of the four members of the gold-medal winning 200 medley relay team,
Anju Shimura,
Mercedes O'Brien and
Jessica Ferguson.
A month before competing at the national championships, the Tritons recaptured the Pacific Coast Swimming and Diving Championships titles they last won in 2007.
