CHICO, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team currently sits in eighth place out of 15 teams after the first two rounds of the InterWest Wildcat Classic being contested at the Butte Creek Country Club. The Tritons shot rounds of 310 and 303 on Monday for a two-round total of 37-over par, 613.
Chico State and Holy Names University are tied for the team lead at 3-over par, 579. The host Wildcats posted rounds 295 and 284, while the Hawks carded rounds of 292 and 287 on the tournament's opening day. Cal State Stanislaus and Saint Martin's University are tied for third place at 590 and Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State's "JV squad" each finished with a two-round total of 594 to tie for fifth place.
Junior Keith Okasaki followed a 7-over par, 79 in round one with an even round to lead the Tritons at 151 heading into Tuesday's third and final round. His two-round total has him in a tie for 26th place, one stroke in front of teammate Raj Samra. Samra carded back-to-back rounds of 4-over, 76 for a tie of 32nd place.
Michael Tilghman had the next best showing for UCSD, firing rounds of 78 and 77 to wrap up the day in a tie for 43rd place at 11-over par, 155. Junior transfer Richard Morris (College of the Desert) registered two rounds of 77 and 79 for a share of 48th place at 12-over par, 156, while Brian Olshock concluded the day at 158 after carding rounds of 80 and 78.
Chico State's Sylvester Gama and Holy Names' Stephan Edman sit atop the individual leaderboard after finishing the day at 3-under par. Gama and Edman carded identical scores of 72 and 69 on the way to a two-round total of 141.
The final round at the 6,906-yard, par-72 course will begin on Tuesday morning.
