SANTA ROSA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team is currently tied for fifth place out of 15 teams after one round at the Sonoma State Invitational being contested at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club. Led by
Raj Samra's 73 on Monday, the Tritons find themselves tied with the host Seawolves at 9-over par, 297.
Two rounds were scheduled during the event's first day on Monday, but play was shortened to 18 holes because of rain. The tournament will conclude with a single round on the 6,711-yard, par-72 course on Tuesday.
Western Washington leads the way after one round with a team total of 1-over par, 288. Grand Canyon and Chico State are tied for second place at 292, while Chico State is fourth with a 295.
Individually, WWU's Xavier Dailly shot a 5-under par, 67 to lead the field following the initial round. Matthew Garcia of Academy of Art University had the next-best score, firing a 68, while Hawaii-Hilo's Neil Cabico shot a 69.
Samra's score has him in a tie for 10th place for the Tritons, one stroke in front of teammates Keith Okasaki and Justin Gabbert. The pair each carded rounds of 2-over, 74 on Monday. Michael Tilghman rounded out the scoring for UCSD with a 4-over, 76.
This is second time in a week the Tritons have played in a tournament that was shortened by inclement weather. The final round of last week's InterWest Wildcat Classic was also cancelled due to heavy rainfall and strong winds in the area.
