UCSD Wraps Up Sonoma State Invite To Conclude Fall Season

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Tied for fifth place after the first round, the UC San Diego men's golf team finished eighth out of 15 teams at the 2009 Sonoma State Invitational held at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club. The Tritons carded a 297 for the second day in a row to finish with a two-round total of 594 in their final competition of the fall season.

Chico State captured a third consecutive team title in the event following a 286 on Tuesday, the low round of the day. Entering the day in third place, the seventh-ranked Wildcats finished with a total of 578, a good score on a course that played high due to rainfall on Monday.

After shooting a 297 on Monday, Dixie State matched Chico's 286 to finish second with a two round total of 583. Western Washington, which entered Tuesday's final round in second place, finished in a tie for third place with Saint Martin's University at 585.

Junior Keith Okasaki carded UCSD's low round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 1-under par, 71. His two-round total of 1-over, 145 led the Tritons and was good enough for a share of eighth place individually.

Justin Gabbert followed an opening round 74 with a 75 on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament at 5-over, 149. Gabbert finished one stroke in front of teammate Raj Samra, who shot a 77 after leading UCSD with a 73 on Monday. Michael Tilghman rounded out the scoring the Tritons, carding a 75 for a two-round total of 151.

Individual medalist honors went to Matthew Garcia of Academy of Art University, who fired a 138 (68-70), while Chico State's Kyle Souza and Eric Frazzetta finished second and third, respectively at 139 (70-69) and 141 (71-70). The Wildcats' Bobby Bucey achieved the first hole-in-one in the tournament's history, sinking the 146-yard sixth hole.

Head coach Mike Wydra's squad will return to competition with the San Diego Collegiate Classic in early February. The Tritons finished eighth in each of their final two tournaments of the fall season.
