LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scipps to kick-off the 2009-10 season on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. The final score on the women's side was UCSD 180-115 while the Triton men won 197-97. The Tritons won nearly every event on both the men's and women's side as UCSD had exhibition swims in various events. UCSD is back in action when it takes on San Diego State (women) and TCU on Friday, November 6 on the SDSU campus.
Multiple winners in individual events included Katherine Tse in the 50 free and 100 free, Daniel Perdew in the 50 free and 100 free, Anju Shimura in the 100 and 200 back events and Beth Dong in the 500 and 1000 meter events. Jereme Barnett-Woods also captured the distance events on the men's side.
On the women's side, Shimura, Mercedes O'Brien, Jessica Ferguson and Tse took top honors with a time of 1:48.87 in the 200 medley relay. Alex Henley won the 200 free with a time of 1:55.09. Karla Holman won the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.13 and Carianne Cunningham won the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.79.
UCSD would have also claimed titles in the 100 fly, 200 IM and 400 free relay events if they were not exhibitioned.
On the men's side the relay team of Julius Espiritu, Juan Pablo Carrillo, Perdew and Todd Langland won the 200 medley relay in 1:34.05. Greg Goodell won the 200 free in 1:46.56 and Espiritu won the 100 back in 54.03. Carrillo won the 100 breast in 57.23 while Adam Rice claimed the 200 fly in 1:55.46.
Shaun Stringer won the 200 back in 1:59.47 while UCSD's 400 free relay team of Espiritu, Todd Langland, Blake Langland and Perdew finished with an exhibition time of 3:07.86.
