LA JOLLA, Calif. - David Bakal, a junior midfielder on the UC San Diego men's soccer squad, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, CoSIDA announced Monday.
Bakal, a Piedmont native, finished second on the Tritons in points this season with three goals and four assists. Starting in 16 of UCSD's 20 matches, Bakal scored in games against Humboldt State, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The 10 points in 2009 represent a stellar improvement on offense from Bakal, who earned a goal and assist through his first two seasons as a Triton.
In the classroom, Bakal has compiled a grade-point average of 3.86 while majoring in Biology at Marshall College.
To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.20 cumulative GPA and starter or significant reserve for her team.
The Tritons' season came to an end Sunday with a 2-0 loss to CSUDH. UCSD finishes with an overall record of 7-9-4 while going 4-9-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
