LA JOLLA, Calif. - Three members of the UC San Diego women's soccer team earned Daktronics/NCAA Division II All-West Region honors Tuesday, including sophomores Kristin Armstrong and Anne Wethe being selected to the First Team.
Just two weeks ago, Armstrong and Wethe were selected to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association First Team.
Not to be outdone, Tritons' freshman defender Ellen Wilson was named to the All-Region Second Team Tuesday. Wilson, having started all of UCSD's 21 matches thus far, has played the second-most minutes on the team, 1,829, behind Armstrong's 1,837. As the center back for the Tritons' defense, Wilson has guided the squad to a conference-low 15 goals allowed.
After backing up Jessica McGovern through the 2008 season, Armstrong stepped into the starting role this year and has played admirably. As the UCSD leader in minutes played, Armstrong has totaled 67 saves while posting six shutouts. Starting in every match so far, she has amassed 15 wins en route to being named the West Region's top netminder.
Wethe, a dynamic midfielder eager to make plays in the air and on the ground, has contributed as a leader on both ends of the field while adding 13 points on three goals and seven assists. Actively involved in the Tritons' attack, Wethe has recorded four of her points this season against CSUDH.
UCSD and Cal State Dominguez Hills face off in Friday's West Region Championship in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in La Jolla. Prior to the match between the Tritons and Toros, West Texas A&M and St. Edward's will play at Triton Soccer Field to decide the top team in the South Central region. The winners from each of Friday's contests will return to the same pitch for quarterfinal action on Sunday at 12 p.m.
