Four More Tritons Nab Qualifiers During Day Two of Toshiba Classic

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's and women's swimming teams continued their strong showing against top competition from Division I and Division II at the Toshiba Classic Friday, as three more Tritons, Karla Holman, Megan Thomas, Neda Nguyen and Natasha Nguyen, notched NCAA qualifying times during day two of the event.

The UCSD men finished the day in fourth place with 425 points, while the women are currently seventh with 276 total points. The top individual finishers for head coach Scott McGihon were Juan Pablo Carrillo and Daniel Perdew on the men's side, and Alex Henley for the women.

The men's 200 medley relay team, with Carrillo and Perdew joined by Julius Espiritu swimming the first leg and Todd Langland swimming the last, finished third behind Stanford and the University of Hawaii with a time of 1:31.92.

Carrillo recorded UCSD's top individual finish of the day, placing fourth in the 100 breast event with a final time of 56.10. Perdew finished sixth in the 100 fly event with a time of 49.99.

On the women's side, Henley finished eighth in the 400 individual medley event with a final time of 4:26.50, more than six seconds faster than the NCAA "A" standard of 4:32.99. The 200 medley relay team, comprised of Anju Shimura, Mercedes O'Brien, Jessica Ferguson, and Katherine Tse, also had a strong showing with a final time of 1:45.70.

Holman recorded a time of 56.78 in the 100 fly, placing 25th. Shea Kopp crossed the finish line at 57.86 in the finals of the 100 backstroke for a 14th-place finish.

In the 100 breaststroke prelims, Neda Nguyen topped the qualifying "A"standard with a time of 1:05.28.

The Tritons dominated the D-II scene in another relay, the 800 free, finishing eighth with a 7:38.91 mark set by Henley, Shimura, Thomas and Natasha Nguyen.
