LEXINGTON, KY - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team had three student-athletes named to the 2009 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-West Region team, it was announced on Tuesday. Seniors
Sylvia Schmidt and
Elaine Chen earned the honors, along with sophomore libero
Roxanne Brunsting. The trio helped the Tritons to a 29-3 record and a national ranking as high as No. 2 in the nation. UCSD advanced to the NCAA West Regional semifinal match. The AVCA All-West Region team consisted of 20 student-athletes, 12 of which hailed from the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Schmidt finished the year with a single-season school record of 478 kills. She also tied the single-match school-record with 31 kills against Sonoma State. Her 1,212 career kills is second in school history behind former Triton Rebecca Bailey who had 1,364 kills from 2005-08. This is Schmidt's second All-West Region AVCA team selection.
Chen had 1,273 assists this season which ranks fourth all-time at UCSD. In her career, Chen amassed 3,094 assists, the second highest mark in school history behind Teresa Ohta who had 4,749 from 2001-04. Chen also earned All-CCAA honors in each of the last two years.
Brunsting recorded the second highest amount of digs in school history with 494 in 2009. Her two-year total of 918 digs already ranks sixth in school history. The No. 1 mark is held by Natalie Facchini who had 1,628 digs from 2004-07). Brunsting was an All-CCAA first-team libero this past season. She also led the Tritons with 61 service aces.
In 2010, UCSD will have a strong returning nucleus with all-conference seletions Brunsting, Hillary Williamson and Julia Freidenberg.
