LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team earned several awards from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon. Leading scorer
Steven Donohoe was honored as the NCAA D-II Player of the Year, while head coach
Denny Harper was named Coach of the Year. Joining Donohoe on the first-team was teammates
Peter Gresham,
Sean Roberts and
David Morton. This is Harper's fourth ACWPC Coach of the Year honor since 2000 and first since 2006 when UCSD went to the final four. Donohoe becomes UCSD's first Player of the Year since 2006, when
Ty Lackey earned the honor.
Harper completed his 29th season as head coach at UCSD as the Tritons went 14-14 and just missed a trip to the NCAA Final Four. In the Western Water Polo Association Championship Tournament, UCSD defeated Redlands 14-13 in overtime, then cruised past Whittier 16-3 in the semifinals. UCSD fell in the title game to Loyola Marymount by a 5-4 decision. Harper now owns a career mark of 525-384-4.
Donohoe's Player of the Year award caps an outstanding career in which he earned ACWPC First-Team honors for three straight seasons. He joins former Tritons Lackey, Jonathan Hopkins (three times) and Jonathan Samuels (twice) as the only athletes to win player of the year accolades at UCSD since the move to Division II. Donohoe finished the year with 66 goals and 22 assists.
Gresham, Roberts, and Morton were all first time ACWPC All-American selections. Roberts finished the year with 31 goals and 29 assists, while Gresham tallied 29 and 13. respectively. Morton was UCSD's goalkeeper and recorded 296 saves, the second highest single-season total in school history.
