LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team (4-9, 1-7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) hosts No. 5 BYU (7-4, 5-3 MPSF) on Friday and Saturday night. First serve on each night is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons are looking for their first-ever win against BYU, as the Cougars have won all 31 previous meetings. UCSD is also looking to put an end to a season-high two match losing streak. Last week the Tritons lost to No.1 Cal State Northridge and fell in five sets to No. 10 UC Santa Barbara.
BYU was idle last week. BYU has split its last three match-ups against MPSF opponents. On January 22-23, BYU split against Stanford, on January 29-30, BYU split against UCLA. And on February 4-5, BYU split against UC Irvine.
The Cougars are led by Andrew Stewart with 3.91 kills per set while Robb Stowell adds 3.53 kills per set. Reed Chilton and Yamil Perez have both seen action at setter, as BYU hits at a .297 clip as a team. Russell Lavaja leads the team with 1.47 blocks per set and a .458 attack percentage.
Last year when UCSD and BYU met in Provo, UT, BYU swept two matches against UCSD. In the first match, BYU cruised to the 30-24, 30-22, 30-21 win as UCSD hit at a .071 clip, compared to .450 for the Cougars.
UCSD was a bit more competitive in the second match, losing 30-28, 30-18, 30-17.
After recording 23 kills against UC Santa Barbara, Jason Spangler is in position to set the school record for career kills as a Triton this weekend. Spangler enters the week with 1,292 career kills, trailing Jim Waller who had 1,301 kills from 2001-04. Last week, Spangler passed former Triton Tom Black who had 1,268 kills. Frank Fritsch also continues to climb the charts. Fritsch sits in fourth place all-time with 1,177 career kills.
The matches against BYU will be UCSD's final home matches until March 26-27. The Tritons will be on the road for three consecutive weekends, followed by a weekend off for final exams.
