LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis team rolled to a convincing 8-1 defeat of Villanova on Monday, improving its record to 5-4 overall this season.
Erik Elliott and Jake Fellow cruised to straight-set wins over their opponents at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions while Vincent Nguyen and Sam Ling each gutted out three-set victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.
Playing singles first to accommodate the women's tennis match that followed, UCSD won five of the six singles matches to secure the overall win before the doubles stage even began. There, the Tritons swept the Division I Wildcats.
Villanova, a member of the Big East conference, drops to 0-9 this season. The Wildcats will compete in the Point Loma Nazarene Tournament and the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships to wrap up their one-week Southern California trip.
Elliott, owner of a 5-2 record this season, snapped a two-match losing streak with his win Monday. Nguyen improved his record to 6-3 so far in 2010 as the team leader in victories.
With the doubles win for Elliott and Fellow, the UCSD pair now holds a 6-2 record while playing mostly out of the No. 2 position.
The Tritons will host Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in an important in-region matchup. UCSD and CPP are ranked fourth and sixth respectively in the Division II's West Region.
