LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 19 UC San Diego women's tennis team secured a comfortable 8-1 home win Monday over Villanova, a member of the Division I's Big East conference.
The Tritons improve to 5-2 overall this season and will prepare for a Saturday road contest with California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal Poly Pomona. UCSD has won 63-straight league matches. Monday's loss drops Villanova to 0-4 during the early stages of the 2010 campaign.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage on the Wildcats with a doubles sweep. UCSD got results of 8-4, 8-2 and 8-2 in that portion, with Anita Athavale and Jacquelyn Davis teaming up to collect their team-high sixth doubles victory of the season.
The impressive performance for the Tritons carried over into singles, where UCSD tallied wins in five of the six matches. Junior Taskeen Bains, who had earned Penn/CCAA Player of the Week honors to start the year, broke a four-match losing streak with a commanding 7-5, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position Monday.
Athavale and Davis earned spots in the singles ladder Monday, each raising their season record to 2-0. At the No. 5 position, sophomore Samantha Yeung secured a 6-3, 6-1 victory to earn her team-high fifth win of the season.
Saturday's match with the CPP is set to start at 11 a.m. The Broncos, after losing a hard-fought home match 5-4 to Cal State Stanislaus last week, holds an overall record of 5-2 and a 2-1 CCAA mark.
