LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis team picked up an impressive 7-2 home victory Tuesday over Cal Poly Pomona, with the Tritons collecting five straight-set singles wins on the day.
With the updated Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings released just hours before the match, each squad moved up one spot from the preseason poll positioning. As of March 2, UCSD is ranked No. 3 in the West Region while CPP sits at No. 5.
Tuesday's win improves the Tritons' overall record to 6-4, including a 4-1 mark this season with in-region Division II matches.
Despite the No. 1 UCSD doubles pair of Armaun Emami and Austin West dropping a close 9-7 match, the Tritons rallied for victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The junior duo of Erik Elliott and Jake Fellow combined for their team-high seventh doubles win of 2010, defeating the Broncos' Joshua Lau and Keith Boggero, 8-2.
In the singles portion of Tuesday's match, Elliott continued his success at the No. 1 position as he defeated CPP's Robby Dabbs by a score of 6-4, 6-1. With the win, Elliott improves his season record to 6-2 overall.
Sam Ling has posted an identical record to Elliott so far in 2010, notching his sixth victory Tuesday with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot in the ladder.
The Tritons will compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, held at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club starting on Thursday. The competition features top doubles pairs from the Southern California region.
