LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 17 UC San Diego women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 home victory over No. 41 Hawaii Hilo Saturday. The Tritons, now 7-2 overall this season, will get a week off for final exams before traveling to Hawaii for three matches.
On Saturday, sophomore Samantha Yeung and junior Cindy Dao turned in dominating performances. Yeung picked up a 6-0 first-set victory at the No. 6 position before her opponent retired. Dao picked up a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the No. 3 spot. Yeung and Dao lead the team in singles wins with seven and six, respectively.
Senior Anita Athavale has performed admirably out of the gates in 2010, collecting a record of 4-0 so far this season. The Los Gatos native picked up her fourth victory Saturday, knocking off the Vulcans' Madison Wells, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 position.
The trip to Hawaii in 11 days will not only feature a rematch with UHH but contests with No. 3 BYU-Hawaii and No. 12 Hawaii Pacific. BYUH and HPU are the squads ranked above UCSD in the Division II West Region.
