SAN DIEGO - With the winter quarter in the books, the UC San Diego track and field teams had a small continent of student-athletes competing in the Point Loma Nazarene Collegiate Open on Saturday.
The meet, which featured competitors from several divisions, served as a final tune-up before next weekend's Cal-Nevada Collegiate Championships for the handful of Triton student-athletes that took part.
Senior
Christine Merrill took a break from the hurdle events but still managed to pick up a victory, besting the field in the 400-meter dash. She broke the tape with a time of 55.31, which was just short of an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.
Fellow senior
Linda Rainwater also had a strong showing, winning the 100-meter hurdles with a provisional qualifying time of 14.55. She also competed in the javelin throw, finishing fourth with a mark of 104'5".
Teammate
Caitlin Meagher finished third in the 100 hurdles at 15.33 and then placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:04.23.
On the men's side, senior
Leon Baham finished just behind Point Loma's Sean Lewis in the 400 hurdles, crossing the finish line at 54.13.
UCSD had two of the top three finishers in the triple jump, as
Andrew Karnaze and
Andrew Tran placed second and third with respective leaps of 44'11.75" and 43'7". Navy's Brian Zitterkopf won the event at 45'9.25".
The Tritons will now travel to Los Angeles to take part in the Cal-Nevada Championships next Saturday and Sunday at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
