TURLOCK, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team rebounded from an opening loss to No. 3 Hawaii Pacific at the Tournament of Champions to win its final two games Friday, including a 5-2 victory over St. Martin's capped off in dramatic fashion with a
Kris Lesovsky three-run blast.
UCSD and St. Martin's entered the seventh inning of their game with the score 2-2. After two Tritons' batters were hit by pitches, Lesovsky launched a ball over the leftfield fence to give UCSD the 5-2 advantage. Sophomore Tess Granath held back the Saints' bats in the final frame as the Tritons pushed their record to 21-10 with the win.
Early Friday morning, the Tritons dropped a 2-0 decision to HPU in a matchup between two of the West Region's top pitchers, UCSD's Camille Gaito and the Sea Warriors' Sherise Musquiz. The pitchers scattered just three hits each but a five-error performance by the Tritons' defense helped HPU secure the victory.
Thanks to the busy 22-team field in Turlock, UCSD got a chance to reverse the momentum as the Tritons stepped right back on the same diamond to challenge Western Oregon.
The Tritons offense came alive against the Wolves, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to eventually capture a 6-3 win over WOU. Junior Rhiannon Ousley produced a critical double for UCSD and ended the game with a 2-for-3 peformance and two runs batted in. Lesovsky helped set the table for the Tritons' attack, scoring two runs and getting on base twice.
Granath, entering the game in relief for the final 4.1 innings, held the Wolves to one earned run and earned the victory.
In the final contest of the day, junior Brittany Sheats earned the start for the Tritons and hurled five strong innings. Without allowing a run in the outing, Sheats struck out four Saints' hitters along the way. UCSD took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, but a homerun from Morgan Klemm tied up the contest for St. Martin's. Opening up the top of the seventh, Tritons' Nicole Saari and Jennifer De Fazio were hit by pitches. The three-run homer from Lesovsky gave UCSD the lead and Granath held on, snagging her second win of the day.
The Tritons will continue action at the Tournament of Champions Saturday with games against Montana State Billings and Central Washington. First pitches are set for 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. respectively.
