GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Led by the stellar play of senior
Raj Samra, the UC San Diego men's golf team is currently in 10th place out of 17 teams following the first two rounds of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational at the Palm Valley Golf Club on Monday. The Tritons shot an opening round 293 and then carded a 288 in round two wrap up the day at 581, one stroke behind host GCU.
Samra opened the tournament with a 71 on the 7,015-yard, par-72 course, before shooting an even 72 in round two to conclude the day at 1-under par, 143. As well as he swung the clubs, Samra's score was only good enough for a share of 14th place, as a total of 24 linksters carded even scores or better after the first two rounds of play.
Samra has a two-stroke lead over teammates
Keith Okasaki and
Richard Morris, who both ended the day at 145 and tied for 25th place individually. Okasaki and Morris carded identical rounds of 72 and 73 on the day.
Michael Neustadt rounded out the scoring for UCSD, following a 6-over par, 78 in round one with a 70 in round two for the Tritons' best round of the day.
Cal State Stanislaus is currently leading the field with a total score of 559. The Warriors carded an impressive 278 in round one, before firing a 281 in round two. CSUS has an 11-shot lead over second place Chico State, which wrapped up the day at 570 after back-to-back 285s. Western New Mexico is a close third at 571 (289-282).
Individually, Cal State San Bernardino's Gene Webster Jr. is out in front after a pair of 67s gave him a day one total of 10-under par, 134. Three players are tied for second at 6-under, 138.
The third and final round will begin Tuesday morning.
