SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field teams were back in action on Saturday, taking part in the second annual Mangrum Invitational on the campus of Cal State San Marcos. Competing against a host of schools from the Southern California area, the Tritons posted several top marks on the day.
UCSD won a total of eight events on the women's side, while the Triton men posted first place marks in four events.
Junior Kelly Fogarty led the UCSD sprints team with a victory in the 100-meter dash, notching a provisional qualifier with a time of 11.90. Teammates Kathleen Hitchens (12.60) and Bailey Weaver (12.78) finished fifth and eighth in the event, respectively.
Senior Linda Rainwater recorded another win in the women's high jump, clearing a height of 5'8.9", while Stephanie LeFever posted the top mark in the long jump at 18'8" and Leah Murphy placed first in the triple jump at 37'6.75".
The Tritons also claimed the women's 4x100 relay, as Christine Merrill, Hitchens, Jacqueline Rose, and Fogarty teamed to post a winning time of 47.28. The 4x400 unit of Rose, LeFever, Anna Lee McGregor, and Merrill finished second with a provisional qualifying time of 3:48.94. UCSD finished just behind Point Loma's foursome that clocked in at 3:48.79.
On the men's side, senior Casey Ryan was the top competitor in the high jump once again, winning the event for the fourth time in 2010 at 6'8.75". He also finished second in the javelin with a toss of 156'4.75".
Fellow senior Daniel Anderson had a strong showing in the 1500, besting the field by nearly three seconds with a time of 3:54.40.
Fred Cook had a big day for the throws team, winning the shot put and finishing second in the hammer throw. He uncorked a toss of 52'2" in the shot, which was good enough for a provisional qualifier, while posting a distance of 176'6" in the hammer. Mike Milakovic, who was competing unattached, took the event with a mark of 199'.
The Tritons will now compete in the 24th annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday, April 10. The UCSD throwing teams will be heading to UCLA for the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite Thursday through Saturday.
