Tritons Picked to Finish 12th by MPSF Coaches

No. 14 UC San Diego Hosts No. 10 UC Irvine And No. 7 UCLA In RIMAC

LA JOLLA, Calif. -The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team (8-17, 4-14 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) hosts No. 10 UC Irvine (12-13, 7-11 MPSF) and No. 7 UCLA (14-11, 9-9 MPSF) this week in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons have already faced both teams twice this season, having done so at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational and later on the road. UCSD has dropped four consecutive matches to the Anteaters with the last UCSD win coming during the 2008 season. The Tritons have defeated the Bruins in each of the last three seasons, including a sweep at Pauley Pavilion on February 24.

Last week UC Irvine lost to USC 32-30, 28-30, 21-30, 30-22, 15-7 and upset Pepperdine 19-30, 30-24, 30-28, 26-30, 19-17.

UCI is led by Carson Clark with 4.93 kills per set while Jordan DuFault averages 3.99 kills per set. Kevin Wynne hits at a team high .445 clip and Bryan Simmons averages 1.29 blocks per set. Anthony Spittle has seen the most action at setter with 10.14 assists per set. As a team, UCI hits at a .323 average.

Last week UCLA lost to Pepperdine 30-24, 25-30, 30-21, 23-30, 15-10 and lost to USC 30-26, 30-21, 30-23. UCLA is led by Jack Polales with 3.88 kills per set and Garrett Muagututia with 3.83 kills per set. Thomas Amberg hits at a team-high .394 clip and Kevin Ker averages 9.97 assists per set. UCLA hits at a .293 average as a team and averages 2.59 blocks per set.

UCSD is lost twice last week at No. 4 Hawaii. UCSD is led by Frank Fritsch with 3.77 kills per set while Jason Spangler adds 3.15 kills per set. Adrian Guthals hits at a team-high .422 clip and leads the Tritons with 1.16 blocks per set. Phil Bannan averages 12.55 assists per set and Andrew Kaban has a team-high 1.99 digs per set.

Spangler and Fritsch are now No. 1 and No. 2 in all-time career kills at UCSD. Spangler is first with 1,420 kills while Fritsch is second with 1,323 kills.

Spangler enters the week with 80 aces which is tied for the school record in career aces. Phil Bannan is third in school history with 3,271 assists.
