WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander Camille Gaito of the UC San Diego softball team has been named the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 29 to April 4, conference officials announced Monday.
Gaito, owner of a 0.63 earned run average that ranks first in the league and third in the nation, continued to put up dazzling numbers last week in UCSD's four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills.
She collected wins in both of her two starts, improving her season record to 13-6. Gaito also collected 11 strikeouts in the 14 innings she threw. On Friday, Gaito put together one of her best performances yet. Retiring 16-straight Toros' hitters at one point, Gaito ended with a complete-game shutout as she racked up a career-high nine strikeouts along the way.
The sophomore has been frugal with the free passes through 2010, conceding just 18 walks to opposing hitters in the 121.1 inning she's logged, including three walks in her 14 innings this past weekend.
It is the second time this season that Gaito has won the conference's Pitcher of the Week award.
The Tritons (25-13 overall, 15-9 CCAA) return to action with a four-game road set against Humboldt State starting Friday at 1 p.m.
