WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego senior thrower
Fred Cook was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 4, it was announced Monday by the conference office.
Cook had a strong showing for the Tritons at the second annual Mangrum Invitational on Saturday, winning the shot put and finishing second in the hammer throw. His toss of 52'2" in the shot not only bested the field, but was also good enough for an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event.
A native of Anderson, S.C., Cook also posted a mark of 176'6" in the hammer, placing second behind unattached competitor Mike Milakovic, who won the event with a distance of 199'.
This marks UCSD's third athlete of the week award this season and second on the men's side. Casey Ryan and Kelly Fogarty were both honored on March 15 after impressive performances at the Point Loma Invitational.
The Triton throws team will be back in action at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie-Joyner Kersee Invitational Thursday through Saturday in Los Angeles. The rest of the team will be competing at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.
