NEW ORLEANS - The UC San Diego track and field teams were both ranked among the top-25 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II national poll that was released on Tuesday. The Triton women came in at No. 2 overall, while UCSD was ranked No. 13 in the men's poll.
Tuesday's announcement marks the first national team rankings of the outdoor season. The poll represents marks accumulated by teams during the 2010 season through last weekend as reported to the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). Mathematical formulae are used to compile a team's ranking based on an athlete's or relay's standing in relation to others in the same event across the country. A team's score in the national team rankings is a reflection of its "cumulative" chances as it relates ultimately to the NCAA Championships.
The regional team index, a reflection of a team's all-around strength in relation to other teams in their region, was also released on Tuesday. UCSD was ranked No. 1 in the West on the women's side, while the men were second behind fellow CCAA foe Chico State.
The next release of updated rankings will come on Tuesday, April 16, with weekly updates leading to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships to be held May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C. For the complete rankings, click here.
Next up for the Tritons is the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational this Saturday. Members of the UCSD throws team will be competing at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite at UCLA Thursday through Saturday.
