ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision Saturday to UC Santa Cruz, the defending national champions at the Division III level.
Rain in the area forced multiple stops and starts of the contest, which was played at the neutral site of the Sonoma State campus. The Tritons and Banana Slugs finished with a shortened seven-point result, with two singles matches ending prematurely.
UCSD falls to 11-10 overall this season while UCSC improves to 13-7. The Tritons fell into a quick 3-0 hole after a doubles sweep and singles victories by Erik Elliott and Junya Yoshida at the top and bottom of the ladder proved to be too little and too late against a tough Banana Slugs squad.
Elliott's 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position over Bryan Pibas broke a four-match losing streak for the junior. Yoshida continues his dominance out of the bottom portion of the ladder, improving his season record to 13-3 with Saturday's 7-6, 6-1 victory over UCSC's Shaun Henry. Eleven of Yoshida's 13 singles wins in 2010 have come at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the lineup.
Because of UCSC needing to play a later match against SSU, the evenly-contested No. 3 matchup between UCSD's Sam Ling and the Banana Slugs' Erich Koeing was cut short with UCSC holding a narrow lead at 7-6, 3-2. The No. 5 position also didn't produce a result but junior Vincent Nguyen held an advantage over Aron Morrill, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0.
The Tritons, ranked at No. 30 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, will return to action Sunday for an 11 a.m. match with No. 36 Sonoma State.
