Three Tritons Take Down School Records On Saturday

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Kelly Fogarty, Daniel Anderson, and Nick Howe all set school records on Saturday, highlighting another busy weekend of competition for the UC San Diego track and field program. Fogarty and Anderson were competing at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, while Howe was one of a handful of Tritons taking part in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite on the campus of UCLA.

All three athletes were the previous record-holders in their respective events and all three have been busy rewriting the pages of the UCSD annals in 2010. Fogarty set a new program standard in both the 100 and 200, while Anderson's mark came in the 800 and Howe accomplished the feat in the javelin throw.

Fogarty broke the tape in the 100 at 11.74, while her time of 24.12 in the 200 was good for second place behind leader Kaltouma Nadjina of Calgary International. She eclipsed her previous bests and prior records of 11.85 and 24.17, respectively. Both times went into the books as NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

Anderson, who set the school mark with a time of 1:51.12 in the 800 at the Cal/Nevada Championships two weeks ago, improved upon that mark Saturday, crossing the finish line in 1:50.56 to win the event. He finished just in front of Point Loma's Corey Botma, who clocked in at 1:52.01.

Howe was one of only five Tritons competing in Los Angeles, but he made UCSD's presence felt with a spectacular individual performance in the javelin. His toss of 220'6" was the top mark in the event, beating out Aris Borjas (unattached) by a full foot. The mark was not only a new program standard, surpassing his old record of 214'7", but it was also the top mark in Division II this season.

The Aptos native entered the day ranked third nationally in the event.

Donna LeFever also picked up a victory at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite, winning the women's pole vault with a provisional qualifying mark of 12'5.5". Other noteworthy performances from the meet on the women's side included Leah Murphy's second place finish in the triple jump (37'8.5") and Stephanie LeFever's fourth place showing in the 100 hurdles (14.61).

On the men's side, Leon Baham placed third in the 400 hurdles (53.42), Jeffrey Head took third in the long jump (21'11.50"), and Casey Ryan was fourth in the high jump (6'6.75").

Also competing at the RJ/JJK Invite was Christine Merrill, Marie Archer, Theresa Richards, and Fred Cook. Merrill finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (59.63) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (14.16), while Archer placed fifth in the hammer throw (169'7") and Richards came in eighth in the javelin (127'6"). Cook took fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 178'3".

UCSD will now send a contingent to the Mt. SAC Decathlon/Heptathlon next Wednesday and Thursday, before competing in the Soka Peace Invitational in Aliso Viejo on Saturday.
