LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 30 UC San Diego men's tennis team aims to build up momentum with two regular season matches remaining and postseason play just around the corner.
The Tritons, 11-10 overall this season, will challenge No. 45 Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday in a 1:30 p.m. road contest. UCSD's regular season finale will be on April 21 against Division I challenger UC Riverside.
With the top four teams from the West advancing into the NCAA postseason, the Tritons looks to add to their resume this week and improve their strong 7-3 mark against in-region Division II opponents. In the most recent ITA rankings, the top four squads included Hawaii Pacific, BYU-Hawaii, UCSD and Sonoma State, listed from No. 1 to No. 4 respectively.
CPP, currently 6-10 overall this season, is playing its regular season finale on Thursday against the Tritons. UCSD topped the Broncos earlier this year, 7-2, when the two squads met on March 2. In that match, the Tritons won two of three doubles contests and five of the six singles matches. At the No. 5 position, Sam Ling recorded a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of his CPP opponent.
Unless the Broncos are selected to advance into the NCAA D-II West Regional, this week's match between UCSD and CPP will be the last for the Pomona men's tennis program. Because of budget restraints, the Broncos' athletics department has been forced to cut men's and women's tennis.
