Rainwater Sets School Record In Heptathlon At Mt. SAC/California Invite

AZUSA, Calif. - UC San Diego's Linda Rainwater and Stephanie LeFever took part in the prestigious Mt. SAC/California Invitational women's heptathlon over the last two days and both athletes came away with new personal bests in the event. Rainwater set a school record with a total of 5,333 points, while LeFever finished with a final tally of 5,193.

Competing against an elite field that featured several Division I opponents, Rainwater and LeFever finished fifth and ninth in the hep, respectively. Ruky Abdulai of Canada was the event winner with a total of 6,086 points, while unattached competitor Kalindra McFadden tallied 5,628 to finish second. Rainwater finished just 10 points behind North Dakota State's Whitney Carlson.

Rainwater posted top-three finishes in three of the seven events to surpass the old UCSD mark of 5,303 points, which she set at last year's NCAA National Championships in San Angelo, Texas. She finished second in the high jump (5'10.5"), third in the shot put (39'5.75"), and third in the 800 (2:17.03).

Her mark in the high jump was also a new program standard, while her toss in the shot put was a personal best.

Rainwater, who won the national title in the heptathlon in 2008, added 229 points to her total from last year's trip to the Mt. SAC Relays, when she scored 5,104 points and placed seventh. She finished just 67 points shy of qualifying for the U.S. Nationals in the event.

LeFever's best showing came in the long jump, where she placed third with a leap of 19'7". She finished eighth in the 200-meter dash (25.64) and ninth in both the 100-meter hurdles (14.49) and high jump (5'4.5").

Rainwater's heptathlon total was good enough for second place on the 2010 Division II national list, while LeFever's is the eighth-highest total this season.

The pair will now rejoin their teammates for Saturday's Soka University Peace Invitational in Aliso Viejo.
