LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 15 UC San Diego women's tennis team captured its seventh-straight conference title Saturday, knocking off No. 19 Cal State Stanislaus by a 6-3 score. In a matchup of 8-1 teams vying for the league crown, the Tritons earned a doubles sweep in the first portion of the match and then split the six singles contests.
"Obviously, being healthy and having all of our players in the lineup like we had today is what we've been waiting for," UCSD head coach
Liz LaPlante said. "Yesterday we talked about rising to the occasion but also enjoying the moment. We made it happen today, playing our best doubles of the year in the most important match."
UCSD improves to 13-6 on the season, closing the California Collegiate Athletic Association slate with a 9-1 mark. CSUS finishes league action with an 8-2 record.
The clinching point for the Tritons came from a singles win by junior
Natalie Varnay, who defeated Vanesa Reibstein at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-1. With Senior Day Saturday honoring the achievements of
Anita Athavale,
Valerie Tang and
Pooja Desai, Athavale picked up the most convincing singles win of the day, a 6-1, 6-0 defeat at the No. 5 position over Heather Cotter.
In the two years of competitive history between the Tritons and Warriors, Saturday marked the first time UCSD had recorded a doubles sweep.
The Tritons have three non-conference matches remaining in the regular season, featuring the opponents of Azusa Pacific, Cal State Northridge and San Diego State.
The top four teams from the West Region will be selected to advance to the NCAA Division II postseason. In the latest poll, BYU-Hawaii was ranked No. 1 while Hawaii Pacific, UCSD and CSUS followed behind at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
