Raj Samra carded rounds of 72 and 68 on Monday to claim a share of third place after the opening day of the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at the Hunter Ranch Golf Course. Samra and the Tritons are currently in sixth place after wrapping up the day at 14-over par, 590.
Samra is one shot off the lead entering Tuesday's final round. Cal State Monterey Bay's John Jackson and Jonathan Earl Cockerill of Cal State Stanislaus are tied atop the leaderboard at -5, 139. Samra and Cal State San Bernardino's Gene Webster Jr. concluded the day at -4, 140 after two rounds on the 6,741-yard, par-72 Hunter Ranch layout.
After an even opening round, Samra came back to shoot a 4-under, 68, matching UCSD's lowest round of the season. Richard Morris carded the same score in the final round at the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invite on March 30.
As a team, UCSD recorded back-to-back rounds of +7, 295 to conclude the day 23 strokes off the lead. Cal State Monterey Bay holds a narrow lead at -9, 567 (280-287), finishing the day one shot in front of Cal State Stanislaus (283-285).
Sonoma State is currently third at -1, 575 (294-281), while Chico State (298-287) and Cal State San Bernardino (288-297) are tied for fourth at +9, 585.
Keith Okasaki finished the day at +3, 147 after carding rounds of 73 and 74 on Monday. Okasaki is two shots in front of teammate Justin Gabbert, who concluded the day with a two-round score of 151 following rounds of 77 and 74. Freshman Anubhav Rastogi rounded out the scoring for UCSD at 9-over par, 153. He shot an opening round 74, before tallying a 77 in round two.
The third and final round begins Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.
