No. 15 UC San Diego Prepares for Playoffs with Final Three Regular Season Matches

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 15 UC San Diego women's tennis team, after securing its seventh-straight conference title with a win this past Saturday, has three regular season matches remaining in 2010 before the NCAA postseason gets underway.

The Tritons will travel to play Azusa Pacific on Wednesday at 2 p.m. before challenging Cal State Northridge on Saturday and San Diego State on Monday to wrap up the regular season.

The top four teams in the region advance to the NCAA Division II postseason, which begins May 8. The selection show to disclose the tournament field will be televised April 28 at 4 p.m. on NCAA.com.

The Tritons captured the league title Saturday, knocking off No. 19 Cal State Stanislaus by a 6-3 score. In a matchup of 8-1 teams vying for the conference crown, the Tritons earned a doubles sweep in the first portion of the match and then split the six singles contests.

UCSD improved to 13-6 on the season, closing the California Collegiate Athletic Association slate with a 9-1 mark. The clinching point for the Tritons came from a singles win by junior Natalie Varnay, who defeated Vanesa Reibstein at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-1.

Wednesday's opponent for the Tritons, APU, currently ranks fifth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).  The Cougars hold an overall record of 12-7 while going 8-7 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. APU and UCSD last met on Feb. 2, 2008, when the Tritons secured a 5-4 victory.

Saturday's challenger, CSUN, stands at 11-7 overall this season, including a 4-4 mark within the Division I's Big West Conference. The Matadors and Tritons last met on Feb. 13, when CSUN secured a 7-0 sweep of the visiting UCSD squad.

On Monday, UCSD will finish its regular season with a match against San Diego State, a squad ranked 75th nationally at the Division I level and currently holding a 12-10 record this season. The Aztecs are 4-4 in the Mountain West Conference.
