PASO ROBLES, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team finished in sixth place out of eight teams at the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships following a third round 313 at the Hunter Ranch Golf Course on Tuesday. Senior
Raj Samra finished tied for ninth place individually, but the Tritons were unable to avoid a third consecutive sixth place showing in the event.
After carding back-to-back rounds of 295 on Monday, the Triton linksters had their struggles in the final round, concluding the day at +25. UCSD wrapped up the tournament at +39, 14 strokes behind fifth place Chico State. The Tritons also finished sixth in 2008 and 2009.
Samra entered the day one shot off the lead at -4, but carded a 78 in the third round to fall out of contention. He finished with a final tally of +2, 218, 10 strokes behind individual medalist John Jackson of Cal State Monterey Bay.
Keith Okasaki and Justin Gabbert were UCSD's next-best finishers, each wrapping things up at +11, 227, which was good enough for a share of 25th place. Okasaki carded an 80 on Tuesday, while Gabbert posted a 76 for the Tritons' low round of the day. Anubhav Rastogi also shot an 80 in the final round for a total of +17, 233 and a share of 31st place.
Led by Jackson's -8, 208, Cal State Monterey Bay claimed its first-ever CCAA Championship. The Otters carried a one-stroke lead over Cal State Stanislaus into the final round and, after both squads fired a 289, CSUMB held on for the title at -8, 856.
Sonoma State finished third at 875, while Cal State San Bernardino finished fourth at 883, and Chico State posted a final tally of 889 to place fifth.
Jackson recorded a four-stroke victory over the rest of the field, as Cal State Stanislaus' Teddy Schrier and Jonathan Earl Cockerill finished tied for second at -4, 212. Kenny Pigman of Cal State San Bernardino and Scott Yeakel of Cal State Monterey Bay shared fourth at -2, 214.
